Bigland Tarn
This route leaves the racecourse through woods and joins the Cumbria Coastal Way to lead you to the short climb to the cairn on Howbarrow. Rest a moment and enjoy the extensive views towards the Lake District fells, the Cartmel Valley, Hampsfell and Morecambe bay. On a clear day you can see Blackpool Tower! If you are very lucky, you may also spot the Snowdonia Range.

Cartmel viewed from Hampsfell.
The way continues along the ridge to Bigland Tarn and Bigland Barrow fishing ponds. It passes through woods, fields, Field Broughton, and quiet country lanes to gain the Hampsfell ridge and the Hospice. Take time to sit awhile inside the Hospice and read the poetry on the walls
.
Inside the Hospice
It is here you can decide to carry on with this route or if you are feeling fit and want your journey to continue, you can opt to do the 22 mile challenge.
On the Hospice roof
The route continues along the ridge and descends into the lovely village of Cartmel, passing the Priory. Try to avoid the temptation of the 4 pubs to finish back at the scout hut.

Sticky Toffee Pudding!!!
There are checkpoints along the way with food and water.
